Havanese Puppy Summer Safety Guide

Fun for the family...and your little Havanese

It’s almost SUMMER!

We are so excited for warm weather, relaxing by the pool, and taking our Havanese to the park every day! I think our pups love this season as much we do! Here are the guidelines we follow to keep our Havanese puppies happy during the hot summer months.

Havanese Puppy Summer Checklist

  1. Practice smart puppy poolside safety. For more information read more on my other post: Pool Safety for your Havanese Puppy
  2. Never leave your puppy in a parked car.
  3. Limit exercise on hot days. Adjust according to the temperature.
  4. After exercise and on especially hot days, add ice cubes to your puppy’s water.
  5. Walk your puppy on the grass to avoid burning their paws on the asphalt. Or walk your puppy early in the morning or later in the evening.
  6. Always have water available whether you are at home, the park, on a walk, or running an errand.
  7. Purchase a puppy cooling mat.
  8. If you lose electricity at home, take your pet with you if you need to leave.
  9. Keep your puppy away from campfire pits and barbecues.
  10. Don’t feed your puppy scraps from barbecues or picnics.
  11. Attach your puppy to a leash (always if they are still being trained) when near the street, and especially around fireworks or other startling noise.
  12. Make sure your Havanese puppy has his ID tags.
  13. Don’t allow your puppy to drink from scummy water or lakes/ponds with blue-green algae.
  14. Apply a pet sunscreen to prevent sunburn, especially on the nose, ears, mouth, and back.
  15. Remove Azaleas and Lilies from your garden, do not let your puppy eat them. Also, put any plant food out of reach.
  16. Protect your puppy from heatstroke. Small puppies have a harder time cooling off and breathing in extreme heat so be aware of how your puppy is handling the heat. Always have fresh water and a shade covering available for your puppy while playing outside. Take your puppy to the vet immediately if they exhibit a red tongue and gums, extreme panting, weakness, distress, rapid heartbeat, vomiting, dizziness, or collapse.

According to the Humane Society, if your puppy shows signs of heatstroke, you should immediately do the following:

Move your puppy out of the sun into shade or an air-conditioned area. Apply cold towels or ice pack to his neck, back, and chest. Run cool water over him and give him cold water or ice cubes. Immediately take your puppy to a veterinarian. When in doubt, take him to the vet!

I hope you and your puppy have a fun and safe summer!

Love,

Angie
