Pool Safety for your Havanese Puppy
Keep your puppy safe at the poolSwim suit season is almost here! We are excited to spend some fun and relaxing time by the pool and get outside more with our Havanese! I feel it’s important to go over some pool safety guidelines for your puppy. In general, you should maintain pool safety as if you have a baby. Like babies, Havanese puppies have a hard time getting out of pools and get tired quickly. Follow these guidelines and have less worry and more fun this summer!
Pool Checklist for Havanese Puppies
- Never leave your Havanese unattended in or near water. Not even for a second.
- Install a locked fence around your pool –make sure your puppy cannot slip through it
- If your puppy gets in the pool, watch him the whole time
- While swimming, give your puppy frequent breaks. If there is any struggling, remove your puppy from the pool
- Purchase a Paws Aboard puppy lifejacket
- When at the pool, bring a food and water bowl for your puppy
- After swimming, rinse or shampoo your dog off with fresh water
- Purchase a pool alarm to alert you

- If your Havanese puppy has a near-drowning experience or injury, immediately take him to your vet
- Remember, you are the parent, your puppy is your baby. It is your responsibility to keep him safe
I hope these guidelines give you a general idea of how to keep your puppy safe at the pool. While I don’t recommend swimming with your Havanese puppy everyday (the chlorine is bad for their coat), I do know the importance of poolside safety and preparedness.
